Donald Trump once called Barack Obama the "founder of ISIS." On Friday, a usually staunch supporter of Trump turned the slam around on the president in surprising fashion. While discussing Trump's decision to pull US troops out of Syria, Brian Kilmeade of Fox & Friends told press secretary Sarah Sanders that Trump "is doing exactly what he criticized President Obama for doing,” reports the Hill. Then came the harsher attack: "He said President Obama is the founder of ISIS; he just re-founded ISIS, because they have 30,000 men there and they are already striking back with our would-be evacuation."

Sanders did her best to defend, saying that she “respectfully and vehemently” disagreed and that the idea Trump was helping ISIS is "absolutely outrageous." To which Kilmeade replied, "Leaving is helping," twice. Trump is known to be a regular watcher of the show, and whether by coincidence or not, he issued a tweet afterward declaring, "I’ve done more damage to ISIS than all recent presidents . . . not even close!” In an analysis at the Washington Post, Aaron Blake writes that Kilmeade's sentiment is a common one on the right, suggesting that conservatives may be trying to get Trump to change his stance, as he did on the potential government shutdown. (The Syria decision led to defense chief Mattis' resignation, and the fallout over that continues.)
