The last part of 2018 was a volatile one for Pete Davidson: He split with Ariana Grande, found himself at the center of controversy for mocking a former Navy SEAL, and deleted his Instagram account after a concerning post in which he hinted at suicide. The 25-year-old SNL star decided to start the new year fresh, however, by facing it directly and publicly, performing two "rough and raucous" stand-up sets in Massachusetts on New Year's Eve, the New York Times reports. In the two sold-out shows in Boston and Medford, Davidson tiptoed into things with what Rolling Stone calls his "typical comedic fare"—including touching on his marijuana use—but he soon addressed the elephant in the room: his break with ex-fiancee Grande. His experience after things ended with the 25-year-old singer showed him "how ugly people can get but also how cool," he revealed.

He noted that even his mom—a school nurse he cried with after splitting with Grande, per Us Weekly—took flak: A student taunted her by singing "Thank U, Next," Grande's song partially inspired by their breakup. Also included in Davidson's set were jabs at Louis CK, who recently made headlines again by joking about survivors of the Parkland shooting. Per the Daily Beast, Davidson said CK tried to get him fired from SNL for smoking too much pot. Davidson also noted Harry Potter star Alan Rickman died the day after Davidson got a Harry Potter-themed tattoo, and that Gene Wilder died the day after Davidson got a Willy Wonka tat. "So, I'm thinking of getting a tattoo of Louis CK. What do you guys think?" he joked. Meanwhile, Grande tweeted Tuesday she's not planning on dating anyone "for the rest of this year / probably my life." (Grande dropped her song right before Davidson was to appear on SNL.)
