"I'm glad he's dead," a stranger told John McCain's widow in a private social media message. Cindy McCain received the message after President Trump renewed his criticism of the longtime senator and POW, tweeting a series of attacks on McCain over the weekend, Today reports. John McCain died last year of brain cancer; Trump was not invited to the funeral. "Your husband was a traitorous piece of warmongering shit," the message said. "Hope your Mrs. Piggy looking daughter chokes to death on the next burger she stuffs down her fat neck, too." The post showed the writer's name. "I want to make sure all of you could see how kind and loving a stranger can be," Cindy McCain wrote.

Trump's attacks focused on McCain's vote against repealing ObamaCare and other matters, and he said McCain was "last in his class" at the Naval Academy—which Roll Call points out isn't true. On Tuesday, Trump said at the White House, "I was never a fan of John McCain, and I never will be,” though he donated more than $30,000 to McCain's presidential campaign in 2008, per CNN. Meghan McCain, who tweeted in response to Trump in the immediate aftermath of his tweetstorm, also fired back at the president on The View, which she co-hosts. "He spends his weekend obsessing over great men because he knows it and I know it and all of you know it, he will never be a great man," she said Monday on the show. She seemed to think we haven't heard the last of it from Trump. "My father was his kryptonite in life," she said. "He’s his kryptonite in death." (Trump's attacks on McCain baffle Mitt Romney.)
