Has Newt Gingrich really gone crazy, or is he just pretending? Eugene Robinson is starting to think it might be the former. “It’s one thing to be a rhetorical bomb-thrower,” he writes in the Washington Post, “and another to lob damp squibs of pure nonsense into the fray.” The damp squib in question: Gingrich’s assertion that Obama exhibits “Kenyan anti-colonial behavior.” What the heck, Robinson wonders, does that even mean? “That Obama is waging a secret campaign to free us from the yoke of British oppression?”

Obama allegedly picked up this frozen-in-time worldview from his Kenyan father. Who left when Obama was 2. “We knew Obama was precocious,” says Robinson. “But if he was so absorbed with the study of colonialism, neocolonialism, imperialism and all the other -isms, when did he have time to learn to go potty?” And this is just Gingrich’s latest nutty outburst. Remember when he called Sonia Sotomayor and Shirley Sherrod racists? Or when he compared Cordoba House supporters to Nazis? In each case, Newt imagined White America under attack from other cultures. “He really needs to get out more.” For more Newt news, click here.
