Add Maureen Dowd and Kathleen Parker to the list of those who think Newt Gingrich has gone "truly gaga" (Dowd's phrase) by espousing the theory that President Obama inherited a Kenyan anti-colonial bias from his father. (For the record, here's the theory as originally written by Dinesh D'Souza in Forbes.)
- Dowd: "So the smear artists are claiming not only that the president is a socialist but that he suffers from a socialism gene," she writes in the New York Times. It plays "into the bigotry of birthers and haters who paint Obama as 'the other.'" Oh, and the theory itself is just plain "stupid."
- Parker: This is "crackpottery," she writes in the Washington Post. "We may never get to the bottom of Barack Obama, but we are fast getting to the bottom of the barrel in trying to sort things out. The last thing Republicans need as they approach a winning season is to be rooting around in the ancient histories of black vs. white on the African continent. It's time to move on, gentlemen. There's nothing here of any benefit, whatsoever."
