Cubs outfielder Tyler Colvin is in the hospital, after a flying chunk of a teammate’s bat stabbed him in the chest during yesterday’s game. Colvin was on third when Wellington Castillo broke his bat on an RBI double. The ball sailed down the line into left field, and the big, pointy head of the bat sailed down the line into Colvin’s chest cavity. Marlins catcher Mike Rivera said it looked like “he was being stabbed.”
Colvin managed to cross home plate, but afterwards was taken to the hospital, where a tube was inserted in the wound, the Chicago Tribune reports. The shard hit mere inches from Colvin’s heart, and could still cause his lung to collapse. He’ll be hospitalized for 2-3 days, and won’t play again this season. “I feel really bad about it,” says Castillo. “It wasn’t on purpose, but he’s my teammate.” (More Tyler Colvin stories.)
