A Spanish workers' union is calling on grandparents to strike from caring for their grandchildren, the Guardian reports. UGT wants to highlight how many working families get necessary child care in the absence of government help—by getting grandma and grandpa to watch the kids. "We want grandparents to strike to prove they are a key part of the way this country functions," says a union leader.

Half of all grandparents in the country are said to watch their grandkids every day. Burdened by long workdays (because of long lunch breaks), it's not unusual for parents to leave the kids for the entire week. But how many will take part in Wednesday's strike? "What do they think we are going to do with (our grandchildren)?" asks one grandma. "Do they want us to dump them in the street?" (More Spain stories.)
