The Democrats may not be laughing come election day. This weekend's Rally to Restore Sanity and/or Fear was a comedic success, but a strategic failure, argue James Hohmann, Marin Cogan, and Byron Tau on Politico. By putting parody above partisan politics, Jon Stewart denied the left a "galvanizing moment" just three days before the polls. Even participants seemed to doubt that the rally would make a difference.
“Most politicians probably view this as a joke," one man tells Politico. "They’re pretty much right, but there’s nothing wrong with that.” Stewart, a liberal who's expressed his own ambivalence toward the Obama administration, said he wasn't there to pick sides. On Tuesday, "people should do what moves them,” he says. “That's not for me to decide.” For more on the Rally to Restore Sanity, click here.
