National Protests Target Iraq War

On the fifth anniversary of Congress' vote to authorize invading Iraq, demonstrators thronged the streets in a dozen US cities yesterday, calling on Congress to cut off war funding and focus on domestic issues. The "national day of action" brought protesters out nationwide, including Boston, LA, New York and Chicago, where two Democratic reps pledged to withhold any further war funding without a date to withdraw.

The nationwide effort was sponsored by the United for Peace and Justice coalition, Reuters reports. "This isn't just a thing where a number of people come to DC," said an organizer. "This is across-the-country sentiment about ending the occupation, redirecting funds for needs in this country." (More Iraq war spending stories.)
