Cholera has claimed more than 900 lives in Haiti and has hit six of the country’s 10 provinces. As of Friday, more than 14,600 had been hospitalized since the outbreak began last month, according to Haiti’s Health Ministry website. Cholera has reached the capital of Port-au-Prince, but only 27 deaths have been recorded there, Reuters reports. The government is attempting to stop the disease from spreading through the tent camps and slums where more than 1.3 million homeless Haitians live following the January earthquake. As many as 200,000 could contract the disease, the UN forecasts.
