Trial resumed in the Elizabeth Smart kidnapping case today, with jurors hearing testimony that Brian David Mitchell was not delusional, but rather deliberately controlling and intimidating, reports the Salt Lake Tribune. Mitchell "has a personality that is much larger than I’ve ever encountered," testified a former cop who ran into Mitchell, his wife, and Smart on the street. "He gave me a look that was so intimidating, so encompassed, he stopped me before I could say hello."
Jurors also watched a tape of a two-hour interrogation of Mitchell after his arrest. In it, he tells cops that Smart was "delivered to us" "by the power of God" and derided the authorities' case against him, saying "it mattereth not ... because God has the power to deliver me." Mitchell also compared his persecution to that of Jesus's followers, sang hymns when sick of questioning, and said Smart had had "a glorious experience." Smart watched today's proceedings from the gallery, reports the AP.
