Irish Protest Austerity Plan

As the final details of an international bailout were being ironed out, thousands of protesters clogged the streets of Dublin today to protest the nation's new austerity plan, reports the BBC. Among other things, it's going to mean tax hikes, sharp drops in public assistance, and thousands of layoffs in the public sector. Today's main rally took place outside the General Post Office, a locale chosen by organizers because it was the site of the Easter Uprising of 1916, a pivotal event in the nation's bid for independence, notes the New York Times.
