A British businessman is facing extradition after being arrested on suspicion of conspiring to murder his bride on their South African honeymoon, the Telegraph reports. Shrien and Anni Dewani had been married just two weeks when their taxi was carjacked Nov. 13. Shrien and the driver were forced out of the car, but Anni, 28, was kidnapped and later found shot in the back of the cab, her jewelry, purse, and phone stolen. Driver Zola Tongo now claims that it was all a plot by Shrien, who Tongo claims hired him and the carjackers to stage the killing, the BBC reports.
Tongo, who was sentenced to 18 years in jail for his role in the murder, alleges Shrien offered him about $2,169 to kill his wife. His claims, which Shrien's family calls "totally ludicrous," are reportedly part of a plea deal. Tongo says he arranged the hit after being hired by Shrien, and that Shrien texted him to tell him the money was in an envelope behind his front passenger seat. Shrien's family calls the twist in the case "extremely convenient for South Africa" and says South African police haven't yet spoke to Shrien. (More Shrien Dewani stories.)
