UN Holds Emergency Meeting Over Korean Tensions

The UN Security Council met in emergency session today amid rising tensions on the Korean Peninsula and a North Korean warning of a "catastrophe" if South Korea goes ahead with a live-fire drill. Russia called for the meeting, and Moscow wants the UN's most powerful body to adopt a statement calling on North Korea and South Korea "to exercise maximum restraint."

The North says it'll launch an even stronger attack if South Korea conducts scheduled drills Tuesday on Yeonpyeong Island—the same island hit in the first attack. A draft resolution being circulated by Russia urges the UN to immediately send an envoy to both countries "to consult on urgent measures to settle peacefully the current crisis." It also calls for problems between the Koreas to be solved "exclusively through peaceful diplomatic means."
