Target continued to donate to anti-gay politicians after its CEO apologized for doing so and promised to investigate the retailer's political donation policy, an investigation by The Awl finds. A few politicians who support gay equality also received relatively small donations, but October filings with the Federal Election Commission show that $31,200 of the $41,200 donated to federal politicians by Target's political action committee after Gregg Steinhafel's apology went to anti-gay rights candidates or to PACs supporting them.

Some of the post-apology donations went to two of the same candidates Target had been criticized for supporting, both of whom oppose not just gay marriage but also oppose labeling attacks on gays as hate crimes. Steinhafel's apology in August followed a wave of bad publicity over the donations and a boycott campaign launched by MoveOn.
