In an unusual burial ritual, relatives scattered the ashes of a castrated murder victim over a Manhattan sidewalk grate to the subway below. Two sisters of 65-year-old Portuguese journalist Carlos Castro sprinkled his remains over a Times Square station. They said they had permission to scatter the ashes there, but a mayoral spokesman denied they did, reports the New York Post.

Castro's 20-year-old boyfriend, Renato Seabra, was arraigned last week on murder charges, and is being held in the psychiatric ward of Bellevue hospital. The male model told police he castrated Castro with a corkscrew to "get rid of his homosexual demons," and left him to die, according to law enforcement authorities. It's not clear why Castro's ashes were scattered where they were, but the room where he was killed was in a Times Square hotel.
