British Lord Guilty of Expenses Scam

A member of Britain's House of Lords could be facing time in the jailhouse for fiddling his expenses to swindle taxpayers out of $18,000. A jury found Lord Taylor of Warwick—who lied about having a residence outside of London in order to claim travel expenses—guilty of false accounting, the Telegraph reports.

Taylor claimed that his primary residence was his nephew's home in Oxford. The nephew says his uncle only visited twice and he was "shocked and angry" to learn of the scam. Taylor—who says other parliamentarians gave him advice on how to abuse the expenses system—faces a maximum sentence of 2 years but is likely to keep his seat in the House of Lords, as no mechanism outside an Act of Parliament exists for expelling errant members.
