Reporting from Cairo, Anderson Cooper and his crew were attacked by Hosni Mubarak supporters today. (Update: For video, click here.) CNN’s Steve Brusk first tweeted a report from Cooper that he was “punched 10 times in the head,” and Cooper himself later described the attack on CNN: As they were trying to get to a neutral zone, “we were set upon by pro-Mubarak supporters punching us in the head. Attacking my producer, my cameraman, trying to grab his camera, trying to break his camera … they didn’t want any pictures taken.”
“We realized the situation would get very bad very quickly” and didn’t want to further incite the crowd by hitting back, he said. As they tried to escape, “the crowd kept growing, kept throwing more punches, kicks ... it was pandemonium, there was really no control to it. Suddenly a young man would look at you and punch you right in the face.” They eventually made it to a safe location, and CNN reports no one was seriously injured.
