Network breached multiple times in past year

The feds are tracking hackers who have slipped past the NASDAQ's computer defenses several times over the past year, reports the Wall Street Journal. The part of the network that handles trades doesn't appear to have been penetrated, and virtually speaking, nothing has been taken, the Journal notes. "So far, [the perpetrators] appear to have just been looking around," says an anonymous insider. The Secret Service started the investigation, and the FBI is now involved.

"Many sophisticated hackers don't immediately try to monetize the situation; they oftentimes do what's called local information gathering, almost like collecting intelligence, to ascertain what would be the best way in the long term to monetize their presence," says a security expert.
