Kate Middleton may be the “commoner” in the relationship, but without her, Prince William could have been a common embarrassment to his royal family, Christopher Andersen tells PopEater. The best-selling author just released William and Kate: A Royal Love Story, and he explains that Wills and brother Harry drink—“a lot”—but that Kate is always “pulling William back from the edge a bit. You always see them coming out of those bars, and he always looks completely smashed, and she's in good shape. She never over imbibes, she's always in control.”

“She's always been a pillar of strength for him,” he continues. Of course, there are benefits on both sides, considering Kate will soon be the future queen—one of the reasons why, Andersen says, her very “savvy” mother has always encouraged Kate’s relationship with William: “If you're going to encourage your daughter to have a relationship with anyone, it might as well be the future king.” Click for more from the interview, including why Andersen seems to imply Kate’s brother is gay—and why he truly believes Prince Harry was fathered by another man. Or click for the "real" reason William finally proposed. (More Kate Middleton stories.)
