The man accused of kidnapping 11-year-old Jaycee Lee Dugard, holding her captive for 18 years, and fathering her two children has made a surprise move by pleading not guilty in court today, reports the Los Angeles Times. Phillip Garrido had been expected to plead guilty to spare Dugard a trial and to try to win a more lenient sentence for his wife, Nancy. Instead, a trial is scheduled to begin on Aug. 1, notes the AP. Nancy also pleaded not guilty. Click for previous stories on the Dugard case. (More Nancy Garrido stories.)
