Grieving families today buried the 12 children shot and killed in a Rio de Janeiro elementary school, as horrifying details emerged about their final moments. Most of the victims, between the ages of 12 and 15, were shot in the head at point blank range. The gunman, 23-year-old Wellington Oliveira, initially burst into the school guns blazing, yelling "I'm going to kill you all!" But he soon progressed to roaming the halls, lining up his victims and shooting them in the head as they begged him to stop, witnesses tell the AP.
Brazilian tradition dictates that all 12 victims, who include 10 girls and two boys, be buried today. The funeral schedule was posted on the school gate, where neighbors wandered past in shock, stopping to pay respects at a row of crosses propped against the school bearing the victims' names. "What an absurd thing that happened!" says one woman who lives across the street from the school. "I never thought anything like this could happen here. Children came running out of that school, desperate, with gunshot wounds, banging on my door and screaming, 'Auntie, please help us!'" (More Brazil stories.)
