Long Island Serial Killer: Latest Remains Found Likely Victim of Another Killer

The serial killer that Long Island cops suspect is using a lonely stretch near Jones Beach as a dumping ground may not be the first to have done so: The latest remains pulled from the area are too old to be connected with those of four prostitutes found in December. "These are so old that roots were growing around the vertebrae and the skull," a source tells the New York Post. "These could be one or two of Joel Rifkin's victims who were never found," or those of another killer.

Rifkin confessed in 1993 to murdering 17 NYC prostitutes and disposing of their bodies all over New York state; three bodies were never found. The age of the remains means that 24-year-old Shannan Gilbert, a New Jersey prostitute, remains unaccounted for. The search for her and other bodies continued today, but took to the sea: As Newsday reports, divers are combing an area known as Hemlock Cove, between Oak and Gilgo beaches.
