A Chicago cop says he has managed to decipher one of the coded messages that have long frustrated investigators—one left by the Zodiac killer. Lt. John Lewison has been something of a Zodiac hobbyist ever since the “BTK Killer” was caught in 2005 using clues from the taunting letters he sent. “I thought to myself, I’ll look back at Zodiac,” Lewison tells the Chicago Tribune. “Perhaps there’s something in the cryptograms he left that could be teased out.”
Lewison zeroed in on a 32-character 1970 cryptogram that supposedly revealed the location of a bomb the killer had planted. After years in which he'd sit down with the code a couple of nights a week, Lewison thinks he has figured out both the location of the bomb and the killer’s initials. But he’s not ready to reveal them to the public yet; he’s going to have his solution looked over by cryptography experts and the FBI first.
