Cops Investigate Weiner's Tweets to Girl, 17

Embattled rep says direct messages were 'neither explicit nor indecent'

When Anthony Weiner wasn't palling around with porn stars or blackjack dealers, he was apparently sending messages to high school girls. Police in Delaware yesterday were questioning a 17-year-old girl about her interactions with the congressman, Fox reports, which a Weiner rep characterized as "neither explicit nor indecent." The girl apparently started following Weiner on Twitter after seeing him speak on a trip to Washington in April.

He in turn followed her, and the New York Times has the content of the direct messages he sent:

  • In response to the girl's comment that she aspired to be president, Weiner wrote: “How hip am I talking to a future president.”
  • The girl tweeted publicly: “talking to Rep Weiner from New York right now! is my life real?” That, notes the Times, set off a conservative group monitoring Weiner's tweets, which then noted: “@RepWeiner new pal is a high school girl. First porn actresses now little girls. Weird.”
  • The girl messaged Weiner that she was being harassed by members of the group, and he apologized and stopped following her.
  • The girl later posted “Don’t forget me. I used to follow you.” in response to Weiner's appeal for new followers. He began following her again, and exchanged three more messages: One about baseball, one in which he jokingly asks her advice over a question about legislation, and a third in which he responds to a YouTube video she posted of a Weiner speech with the caption, "My true love." “I came back strong,” he wrote, apparently joking about superheroes. “Large. Tights and cape. ...”
