Good news: You don't have to be rich to have a bed in a doomsday bunker. Vivos, the maker of luxe shelters that cater to those fearing planet-busting volcanoes and asteroids, is now advertising "economy class" bunkers that cost less than half the price of their luxury rooms, reports CNN. The California-based company got its start by selling spaces in five high-end bunkers: the spacious rooms start at $25,000 and are reportedly housed in a community that includes medical and dental centers, pool tables, pet kennels, and wine cellars. By knocking down walls and installing bunk beds, the company slashed the price of an economy class slot to $9,950.
Like its pricier counterpart, the Vivos 1000 is built to withstand a 20-megaton nuclear blast within six miles. But the pricier rooms guarantee a year of “autonomous” survival, while the bargain bunkers promise just six months of survival. Vivos says interest is at an all-time high, and claims 10,000 people have either applied for a spot or put down a deposit; reservations reportedly shot up nearly 1,000% following this spring's earthquake in Japan.
