One of the most experienced police dog trainers in Britain slashed his wrists in an apparent suicide attempt after accidentally leaving two dogs to roast to death in a locked car on one of the hottest days of the year. Sergeant Ian Craven didn't remember leaving the dogs, a working Belgian Malinois and a German Shepherd puppy, until hours after he exited the dog training center to work at a different site, the Daily Mail reports.

Staff at the center smashed the vehicle's windows and doused the dogs in water after receiving a phone call from Craven, but it was too late to save them. Craven fled in a colleague's vehicle after learning that the dogs had died and was hospitalized after being found with his wrists cut. The sergeant, who was disciplined over the death of a spaniel he left in a vehicle in 2004, may face prosecution for animal cruelty. (More police dogs stories.)
