Temperatures in Phoenix hit a new high for the day yesterday, reaching a brutal 118 degrees, reports the AP. It was so hot that a local prison ordered thousands of bags of ice for inmates. Nearby storms toppled powerlines, knocking out power—and air conditioning—to some 4,000 homes in the suburbs. But the silver lining: Meteorologists say those same clouds kept temperatures under 120.
