Details are emerging about Anders Behring Breivik's months of planning for the Norway terror attacks—from Breivik himself. Included in his 1,500-page manifesto is a meticulously detailed diary that begins on May 1. He writes that his preparations began years earlier, but got truly serious in April when he rented a farm several hours from Oslo—and practically next door to a military base. He told others he was growing sugar beets, since those require a lot of fertilizer; six tons of it were delivered to the farm on May 4. By then he had also rented a van capable of carrying 1,500 pounds, the Washington Post reports.

In addition to details of Breivik mixing the explosives, he takes time to complain about the "asylum seeker from Kenya" competing for Norway in the Eurovision Song Contest, and to note the "relatively hot girl" checking him out when he picks up Chinese food in town. (Breivik, who railed against multiculturalism, apparently liked Chinese food more than he liked the Chinese equipment he was using, which he often complained about in his diary.) By July 15 he had used up almost all of his roughly $18,000, and rented another van with a carrying capacity of almost 1.5 tons. The Post notes that the narrative at this point is hard to follow, perhaps because Breivik may have been taking body-building supplements and amphetamines.
