If you want to get inside America's most famous statue, you'll have to do it before Oct. 28—or wait at least a year. The Statue of Liberty will close for a year after the 125th anniversary of its dedication, for a major renovation to improve safety and make the interior more accessible, AP reports. Liberty Island will remain open during the renovation and views of the statue will be largely unobstructed.

The statue was closed after the 9/11 attacks because of safety concerns. The base and pedestal were reopened in 2004 after a security upgrade and the observation deck at the crown was reopened on the 4th of July 2009. The renovation, which will include installing new stairways and upgrading electrical systems, will be "a major step in bringing a 19th-century icon into the 21st century," said Interior Secretary Ken Salazar.
