US / butter Activists Hang 'Go Vegan' Sign on Iowa Butter Cow After impressive late-night raid By Kevin Spak, Newser Staff Posted Aug 15, 2011 1:05 PM CDT Copied Fair goers walk past the butter sculpture during the opening day of the Iowa State Fair, Thursday, Aug. 11, 2011, in Des Moines, Iowa. (AP Photo/Charlie Neibergall) Animal rights activists staged a daring late-night break-in Saturday night to hang a “Go vegan” sign on a butter cow at the Iowa State Fair. The activists snuck past a guard, scaled a wall in a back hallway, and broke into the refrigerated case holding the sculpture. Then they emailed the Des Moines Register to let the paper know they had “redecorated the butter cow.” “The butter cow represents humankind's tyranny over defenseless animals,” the activists explained. The sign was only up for a couple hours yesterday morning, and didn’t harm the sculpture. Fair officials say they don’t really care. “It was very minor for us because it was so early in the morning,” a spokeswoman said. (More butter stories.) Report an error
