(Newser) – A former News of the World journalist who covered the United States from Los Angeles for several years was arrested today in London for his role in the ongoing phone-hacking scandal, reports the Guardian. The arrest of James Desborough further raises questions about whether NotW hacked phones in the United States, which the FBI started investigating over 9/11 victims but has since expanded.

Desborough was awarded the 2009 British Press Award for show biz reporter of the year, praised by judges for "uncompromising scoops which mean no celebrity with secrets can sleep easy." He worked for NotW until the paper was suddenly shut down last month. (Read more News of the World stories.)
