A California cop is hit in the neck in a dramatic video of a shootout outside a family home where a suicidal father killed his baby daughter and mother-in-law, according to investigators. Police officer Jarred Slocum can be seen sprinting to safety, clutching his neck, before collapsing on an El Cajon street. Gunman Kevin James Collier had opened fire on the officers responding to a domestic violence call, then ran into his home and set it ablaze, reports MSNBC. His body and his mother-in-law's were later discovered inside. Collier's 14-month-old baby daughter was found shot dead in his truck, reports the Daily Mail.

It's not clear what triggered the violence, though Collier's wife had recently filed for divorce. To outsiders Collier, 32, appeared to be the perfect husband and father, and was so affectionate at his wife's baby shower that a pal of the mom-to-be said she longed "for a man like that." But Collier's mother-in-law texted a friend as police arrived that he "has lost his effing mind. My son-in-law has taken my grandbaby and disappeared. I've never been so scared in my life. He has guns and he's going to shoot my daughter." Soon after Collier himself texted friends that he had killed his mother-in-law and baby. Collier's wife, who was not on the scene, is safe. Slocum underwent emergency surgery and is recovering in a local hospital. (More Kevin James Collier stories.)
