Lots of countries have laws preventing criminals from profiting from their crimes. “By rather stark contrast, Dick Cheney will prance around the next several weeks in the nation's largest media venues,” touting his new book and debating “whether he was right to invade other countries, torture, and illegally spy on Americans,” Glenn Greenwald of Salon fumes. And he’ll “profit greatly by doing so.”

Cheney can get away with this because the Obama administration— “marching under the deceitful Orwellian banner of Look Forward, Not Backward”—decided to block all legal investigations of its predecessors, Greenwald writes. If you demand citizens “avert their eyes from the crimes of their leaders … the crimes become non-crimes, legitimate acts of political choice." The episode sends a crystal clear message: “Criminal accountability is only for ordinary citizens and other nations’ (unfriendly) rulers," concludes Greenwald. (More Dick Cheney stories.)
