Clearly, Beyonce’s little announcement stole the show last night at the MTV Video Music Awards. But coming in as a close second was Lady Gaga, who spent the entire evening in character as her male alter ego, “Jo Calderone.” The drag performance “got off to a rocky start,” but improved dramatically and “was actually quite something” once the music got going, Willa Paskin writes in New York. (Though "not as 'something' as the audience's 'huh?' reaction shots," she quips.)

On Gawker, however, Matt Cherette was not happy that Gaga stayed in character throughout her next two appearances on the show. “That's when, even for the most hardened Gaga fans, it all became too much,” he writes. “The moment she officially, even if temporarily, jumped the shark.” You can watch Gaga's performance here.
