Carlos the Jackal Goes on Hunger Strike in French Prison

Carlos the Jackal has been on a hunger strike for a week to protest his treatment inside a French prison, and his health is worsening, reports the Daily Mail. A lawyer for the 62-year-old Venezuelan terrorist wrote in a letter that Carlos refuses to eat due to "the deliberate violation of my client's rights by the prison administration." Carlos was recently transported to solitary confinement after using a prison phone to communicate with journalists.

Carlos—actual name Ilich Ramirez Sanchez—is serving a life term for murder in one of France's most infamous maximum security prisons, La Sante, in Paris. He is also awaiting a trial in November over a slew of bomb attacks in Paris that killed 11 people and injured hundreds in the early 1980s. (More Carlos the Jackal stories.)
