A tragedy out of Oklahoma State University: The women’s basketball coach and assistant coach were killed in a plane crash in Arkansas yesterday. Kurt Budke and Miranda Serna were on a recruiting trip when their single-engine plane crashed in steep terrain about 45 miles from Little Rock. The AP reports that the pilot and another passenger also were killed, and the Oklahoman names those victims as a former state senator, piloting the plane, and his wife. According to a statement from the school, there were no survivors.
The NTSB is investigating the cause. A hunter's wife reported the forest crash, says a sheriff's department investigator: "She saw the airplane swirling. It basically nose-dived and crashed." OSU’s women’s basketball home games for tomorrow and Sunday have been canceled. A similar tragedy struck the school in 2001, when 10 men connected to the men’s basketball team died in a plane crash in Colorado. After that, the university began requiring planes used by school sports teams to submit to special safety checks. (More Oklahoma State University stories.)
