Another sign that he is indeed a contender in the world of modern politics: Newt Gingrich's website has added a page intended to act as a sort of scandal deflector, notes Politico. It takes on some of the common "attacks" being leveled against him, including those under a header of "personal life." Included is the charge that critics call him a hypocrite for pursuing the impeachment of Bill Clinton even though Gingrich himself had admitted to an affair. "What these accusers are ignoring is that the impeachment proceedings against President Clinton were due to the fact that the president committed perjury in front of a sitting federal judge, which is a felony."

He also calls a "vicious lie" the story that he asked his former wife for a divorce in the hospital. The page addresses 14 other issues under various categories, including his work for Freddie Mac, with more to follow. "See an attack that is not answered?" it reads. "Let us know here. This page will grow as we receive more feedback to help you answer the attacks." Adds Jonathan Martin of Politico: "(T)he sheer volume of issues, and anticipation that more will come, is a reminder of the difficulty the former speaker could have as the glare grows more intense in the weeks ahead."
