Google Street View has been updated to show what Japan looks like after the tsunami and earthquake in March. Google also launched a site called Memories for the Future where users can compare before-and-after shots of the disaster zone. Between July and November, Google dispatched its camera-clad vehicles through 27,000 miles of the ravaged region, reports the Washington Post, which collects some of the images.

“In the case of the post-tsunami imagery of Japan, we hope this particular digital archiving project will be useful to researchers and scientists who study the effects of natural disasters,” Google posted on the company blog. “We also believe that the imagery is a useful tool for anyone around the world who wants to better understand the extent of the damage.” (More Google Street View stories.)
