The Help was the big winner at the 18th annual Screen Actors Guild Awards last night, taking three awards many had expected to go to The Artist. The drama about racism in the South won awards including best cast performance, the SAG equivalent of the Oscars' best picture, reports the Los Angeles Times. The Artist's Jean Dujardin beat better-known stars including Brad Pitt and George Clooney to win the best male actor award. The Help's Viola Davis took home the best female actor award.
On the television side, Boardwalk Empire won two awards, taking the outstanding performance by an ensemble in a drama series trophy for the second year in the row, the Hollywood Reporter notes. Modern Family repeated last year's comedy series ensemble win, while 30 Rock's Alec Baldwin won best male comedy actor for the sixth time in a row. Hot in Cleveland's Betty White got a standing ovation when she picked up the outstanding female actor in a comedy series trophy. "You can't name me without naming those other wonderful women on Hot in Cleveland,' the 90-year-old said. "This nomination belongs to four of us. Please, please know that I'm dealing them right in with this. I'm not going to let them keep this, but I'll let them see it." (More The Help stories.)
