Newt Gingrich tried to cut into Mitt Romney's lead yesterday with a furious attack on his rival—and the "Wall Street elite." Speaking to Bloomberg, Gingrich accused Romney of being a "fundamentally dishonest" tool of the big banks and promised to run a White House that would prevent that would "challenge the system head-on” and stop the elite from "rigging the game."
Romney, Gingrich says, "has the ability to raise an amazing amount of money out of Wall Street, from Goldman Sachs, to all the major banks" and has a policy of "carpet-bombing his opponent." Gingrich says the reason he may have appeared tired during the two debates last week was because he was "staring in amazement" at Romney. "I’m standing there thinking to myself, ‘You think you can lie your way to the presidency?" Gingrich said he would be joined by Ronald Reagan's son Michael on the campaign trail Monday, showing doubters that he is the "legitimate heir of the Reagan movement." (More Election 2012 stories.)
