Mitt Romney is trying to put to rest his foot-in-mouth statement about the nation's low-earners, reports the Washington Post. Asked about his comment that "I'm not concerned about the very poor" because they have a safety net, Romney told a Nevada interviewer: "It was a misstatement. I've said something that is similar to that but quite acceptable for a long time." (The Post notes that he has previously said he isn't worried about the rich, only the middle class.) "When you do I don't know how many thousands of interviews now and then you may get it wrong. And I misspoke. Plain and simple."
Romney is no doubt hoping the interview on Face to Face with Jon Ralston puts an end to the questions and ridicule about the matter, "despite the reality that Democrats—and Newt Gingrich—will make hay of it for weeks to come," writes Maggie Haberman at Politico.
