Another Wealth Flub? Romneys Like Their Cadillacs

Mitt Romney, he of the $10,000 bet and lack of concern for the very poor, stepped in it a wee bit today with another comment whose unintentional subtext was: Yeah, I have a lot more money than you. While talking to the Detroit Economic Club, he spoke, appropriately, about cars, and how much he loves being back on the streets of Michigan. "I like the fact that most of the cars I see are Detroit-made automobiles," he said. He may have wanted to stop there.

Instead, he continued, "I drive a Mustang and a Chevy pick-up truck. Ann drives a couple of Cadillacs, actually. And I used to have a Dodge truck. So I used to have all three covered." His wife's multiple Cadillacs raised a few eyebrows. Writing for the Washington Post, Felicia Sonmez notes that the line was ad-libbed, and "would not be so troublesome if it weren’t for the fact that Romney has shown a tendency to make unforced errors on the campaign trail when making comments related to wealth." His campaign went on to explain that Ann drives a 2007 and a 2010 Cadillac SRX; one in California, and one in Massachusetts. (More Mitt Romney stories.)
