A University of Maryland student has been busted after he threatened on the Internet to go on a shooting rampage at the College Park campus and "kill enough people to make national news," said law enforcement authorities. Alexander Song, 19, of Maryland, also warned people reading his site to "stay away from the mall" near campus, reports the Baltimore Sun. A former student who spotted the comments on Reddit.com, and two other people who had contact with Song on omegle.com informed the school, according to cops.
Violence at schools "seems like it's cropping up more," said a police spokesman. "We'll always do whatever we need to do to see who is posting these things, or do whatever is necessary." Song was taken to a local hospital for a psychiatric evaluation after his arrest yesterday. He wasn't armed and didn't appear to have access to weapons, according to cops. He was charged with a misdemeanor of disturbing school activities, which carries a possible sentence of six months in jail or a $2,500 fine. Song has been suspended from school, and won't be allowed back on campus until a review, said university officials. (More University of Maryland stories.)
