Jason Russell, a co-founder of the charity behind the Kony 2012 viral video, was detained in San Diego yesterday for allegedly being drunk and masturbating in public. Russell, 33, was found allegedly vandalizing cars, masturbating, and generally acting strange, a police officer says, adding that he may have been under the influence of something. Police investigated after receiving calls in the morning about a man "in various stages of undress," NBC San Diego reports, screaming and running around in traffic. Cops found him "in his underwear," they say, although he may have had that off at one point before they arrived.

"Due to the nature of the detention, he was not arrested," the officer says, noting that no criminal charges are pending. "During the evaluation we learned we probably needed to take him to a medical facility because of statements he was saying." In a statement today, Invisible Children's CEO acknowledges Russell has been hospitalized and is receiving medical care after "suffering from exhaustion, dehydration, and malnutrition." Ben Keesey adds, "The past two weeks have taken a severe emotional toll on all of us, Jason especially, and that toll manifested itself in an unfortunate incident yesterday."
