At least seven people were killed as suicide bombers hit targets in Kabul just hours after the departure of President Obama. A suicide car bomber killed a guard and several passers-by at the gates of the "Green Village" compound that houses hundreds of international workers, Reuters reports. Other attackers then stormed the compound and fought security forces, Afghan officials tell the AP. At least 17 people were injured, mostly children on their way to school.
A Taliban spokesman claimed responsibility for the attack, saying it was a response to Obama's visit to Afghanistan and signing of a security accord with Hamid Karzai. "This was a message to Obama that those are not real Afghans that are signing documents about this country," he said. "The real Afghan nation are those people that are not letting foreign invaders stay in this country or disrespect the dignity of our country." (More Taliban stories.)
