So much for spousal privilege. On the first anniversary of Osama bin Laden’s death, Hillary Clinton yesterday revealed that her husband had no idea the raid was going on. Today on the Ellen DeGeneres Show the former president himself backs that up in a discussion about how he found out, Radar reports. He explains that he "didn’t know about [bin Laden] until they told me"—they, meaning the White House. Hillary "never said a word."
"If a former president asks for it on a daily basis, you can get a briefing from the CIA called a President's daily brief. You can get a [condensed] version of that," he added. "When [Hillary] got named to that position I said, 'Look, I don’t want any more briefings unless the president or the National Security Council, the White House people want me to have it. Because I give too many talks, I do too much work.'" The Atlantic Wire and the New York Post have more tidbits from Hillary’s interview last night on Rock Center:
- That iconic picture of Hillary with her hand over her mouth in the Situation Room during the raid? The one she tried to pass off as just allergies? Turns out she was actually worried. "This picture was taken right as the helicopter was having some problems," President Obama said. "I remember Hillary putting her hand over her mouth at that point. There's silence at this point in the room." Hillary herself adds, "That's the way I usually look when my husband drags me to an action movie. What it conjures up is all of the emotions that were running through my and every other person in that small group. It was just an extraordinary experience."
- One day before the raid, Hillary found herself forced to lie at a wedding where a fellow guest approached her to ask, "Do you think we’ll ever get bin Laden?" She knew about the raid that that point, of course. "I said [to the wedding guest], ‘I don’t know, I have no way of knowing, but I can tell you this, we’ll keep trying.’"
