New York Post columnist Phil Mushnick is taking some heat for some, er, colorful comments in today's column about the Brooklyn Nets' new uniforms. "As long as the Nets are allowing Jay-Z to call their marketing shots—what a shock that he chose black and white as the new team colors to stress, as the Nets explained, their new 'urban' home—why not have him apply the full Jay-Z treatment?" Mushnick writes. "Why the Brooklyn Nets when they can be the New York N------s?"
He wasn't done, either: "The cheerleaders could be the Brooklyn B----hes or Hoes. Team logo? A 9 mm with hollow-tip shell casings strewn beneath. Wanna be Jay-Z hip? Then go all the way!" Needless to say, this did not go over well.
- "There is so much going wrong at once that it's a bit overwhelming," writes Sarah Devlin of Sports Grid, speculating that Mushnick's goal was to be "as racist and out of touch as humanly possible."
- Stephen Douglas of the Big Lead took a precautionary screenshot of the offending passage, "because I can't imagine the Post doesn't edit it in the near future. Or fire/suspend/reprimand Mushnick."
- "Phil Mushnick wants you to know that he has a black friend and he even once watched a full episode of Moesha. #CantBeRacist," Jason Whitlock quipped on Twitter.
