As the details emerge about how police finally tracked down kidnapper and killer Adam Mayes in the woods of Mississippi, the AP picks up on a heart-wrenching detail: After Mayes fatally shot himself as officers approached, 12-year-old Alexandria Bain turned to her 8-year-old sister, Kyliyah, and said, "Now we can go home." It's not clear yet whether they knew at the time that Mayes had killed their mother and older sister.

Authorities described the girls, who were just inches away from Mayes, as subdued but relieved that their ordeal was over. They "didn't cry," said one Highway Patrol sergeant at the scene, according to CNN. Officers gave them water, and they were taken to a hospital before going home to their father.
