Governator to Sue Feds Over Emissions

Arnold Schwarzenegger will sue the federal government after the EPA denied California a waiver that would have allowed the state to cut greenhouse gas emissions in vehicles faster than federal mandates. The California plan would raise fuel efficiency standards to 43.7mpg by 2016; the federal plan 40mpg by 2020. Sixteen other states had signed up to California's plan before the EPA scuppered it, says CNN.

Schwarzenegger has been frustrated for months with his on-again-off-again ally George W. Bush over environmental policy. The president defended the decision of the EPA, insisting that a federal response was necessary to fight climate change. But Scharzenegger blasted Bush for dragging his feet on the issue: "Anything less than aggressive action on the greatest environmental threat of all time is inexcusable."
